Kevin Na takes 16 on a par 4
April 2011

In the first round of the 2011 Valero Texas Open, Kevin Na takes a 12 over 16 at the par 4 9th hole, the highest score ever recorded at a par 4 on the PGA Tour. If you find it hard to follow (and Na certainly did!), here's what happened:

Na hit his first drive right, deep into scrub and bushes, and found the ball but took an unplayable lie and returned to the tee. He drove right again, almost in the same area, so hit a third, provisional ball, but found his second drive. Trying to punch it back into play he hit a branch and the ball richocheted into him, incurring a one-shot penalty, after which he dropped from another unplayable lie. It took seven more hasty swings - one of them an air-shot - before his ball finally emerged from the scrub onto the semi-rough in 13 shots. His approach found the back fringe and he putted well past the hole, but holed a good putt for what was finally, with the help of television video, judged to be a 16.
