Ticker tape parade lined up for Michael Campbell
U.S Open champion Michael Campbell will receive a ticker-tape parade
through central Wellington when he returns to New Zealand next week.
Campbell became the second New Zealander to win a major title when
he held off a storming Tiger Woods to snatch a two-shot victory
at Pinehurst in North Carolina last month.
Bob Charles was the first when he won the British Open at Royal
Lytham in 1963.
Campbell followed up his U.S. Open success with a tie for fifth
in last weekend's British Open, behind Woods, who snared his 10th
major title.
"We're a city that knows the meaning of hard work and perseverance
and we openly celebrate success," Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast
said in a statement on Thursday.
"Michael is an inspiration to all of us and a reminder that
someone from the Wellington region can take on the world's best
and win."
The July 29 parade for the 36-year-old Campbell, who grew up in
Titahi Bay, about 20kms north of Wellington, will begin in the grounds
of the Parliament and wind it's way through the central city before
arriving outside the town hall for a civic reception.
"I'm sure people will turn out in droves to welcome Michael
and congratulate him," Prendergast added.
"We want to give him the kind of reception he deserves so
I am encouraging everyone to line the streets and fill Civic Square
next Friday."
