Thongchai pitches in for tsunami relief
Asian
Tour number one Thongchai Jaidee helped raise approximately US$40,000
in a charity auction on Wednesday night for tsunami relief efforts
in Indonesia.
The Thai star was auctioned off for a round of golf during the
Enjoy Jakarta Standard Chartered Indonesia Open Pro-Am cocktail.
Amongst other items that were sold to raise funds included memorabilias
of Europe's Ryder Cup triumph last year and a putter donated by
Thongchai.
Scotsman Colin Montgomerie, one of the star names here this week,
donated a three wood which was also snapped up by bidders while
the European Tour contributed US$100,000 to the relief fund.
The Asian Tour had earlier raised S$65,000 through a charity Pro-Am
in Singapore in January for the Red Cross.
The US$1 million Standard Chartered Indonesia Open is jointly sanctioned
by the Asian Tour and European Tour and is being played at the par
70 Cengkareng Golf Club on the outskirts of Jakarta.
Montgomerie and McGinley presented the cheque to Deputy Senior
Governor of the Bank of Indonesia, Miranda Gultom. The Bank of Indonesia
is co-ordinating aid donations for Indonesia's relief effort, including
those from Standard Chartered Bank and will be channelling the funds
to the Indonesia Red Cross to further assist the Aid Appeal.
The tsunami tragedy took the lives of left tens of thousands across
Asia and left many more homeless following an earthquake that sparked
the killer waves on December 26, 2004.
