Choi makes it four - by four - in the US
Korean star Choi Kyung-ju claimed his fourth career title on the
US PGA Tour when he cruised to a comfortable four-shot victory at
the Chrysler Championship on Sunday.
The Asian strongman, who led after the second and third rounds,
carded a four-under-par 67 at Innisbrook for a 13-under-par 271
winning total, well clear of Paul Goydos and Brett Wetterich.
The victory, his second in the event, propelled Choi into next week's
The Tour Championship and the winners-only Mercedes Benz Championship
to start next year. He won US$954,000.
Leading by one overnight, Choi quickly took the tournament by the
scruff of its neck when he eagled the opening hole with a glorious
three wood approach to 20 feet of the flag.
The field did not get to within two shots of Choi for the rest of
the final round.
"I was really comfortable. The wind was blowing right to left
which I'm comfortable with and it was a very good start with the
eagle. I hit a lot of controlled irons," said Choi, who will
feature in next month's UBS Hong Kong Open.
Choi started using a new driver last week and started to find more
fairways with it. His victory moved him up to 26th place on the
money list with US$2.26 million. In 25 tournaments this season,
Choi has made 21 cuts, although he missed three cuts in the majors.
His top-30 finish will also see him return to Augusta National for
the US Masters, the year's first major in April.
American Ted Purdy finished tied 13th after closing with a 70 for
a 280 total while Sweden's Daniel Chopra signed off with a disappointing
76 for 44th position.
India's Arjun Atwal missed the halfway cut in the event which means
that he will have to return to Qualifying School next month to regain
his playing rights on the US PGA Tour.
On the Nationwide Tour, Asian Tour members Andrew Buckle, Charlie
Wi and Jarrod Lyle all missed the halfway cut at the Miccosukee
Championship.
Battling for a top-22 finish with the season-ending Nationwide Tour
Championship to play this week, Lyle dropped one rung to 15th place
on the money list, Buckle dropped to 18th while Wi is ranked 38th.
In the ABC Championship in Japan, Korea's Yang Yong-eun lost in
a play-off to Shingo Katayama of Japan. Both players finished tied
at 17-under-par 271 with Yang closing with a 65 but was caught by
Katayama who fired a scintillating 62.
Filipino veteran Frankie Minoza finished tied 15th with a closing
68 giving him a week's total of 283 while Thailand's Prayad Marksaeng
came in equal 21st on 285.
