Choi bounces back at Medinah
Choi
Kyung-ju broke his major slump with a second round five-under-par
67 in the US PGA Championship on Friday. The Korean star has a two-day
total of four-under-par 140, just four shots off the lead.
A quartet of players, Henrik Stenson, Luke Donald, Billy Andrade
and Tim Herron, share the lead in the year's final major at Medinah
Country Club on 136, with Tiger Woods, the world's number one, lurking
a shot back.
Former Asian Tour regulars Daniel Chopra and Shaun Micheel were
well poised to strike at the weekend, moving up to tied 12th place
on 139 after rounds of 67 and 70 respectively.
Chopra enjoyed a blistering outward 32 before cooling off with two
more birdies against a lone bogey.
Choi, a three-time winner on the US PGA Tour, has missed the cut
in the earlier three majors this season and an opening 73 did not
brighten his chances. But a stellar round that included six birdies
against a lone bogey hauled him up the leaderboard and gave him
a shout at the weekend.
Australian Andrew Buckle, third on the UBS Order of Merit, missed
the cut by two shots after a second straight 73, his hopes of playing
four rounds in his maiden appearance at the PGA Championship literally
vanished after a double bogey at the par five 10th hole.
Korea's Hur Suk-ho, known better as SK Ho, dropped out after a 79
as did Ted Purdy, who signed for a 75.
On the European Tour's Russian Open, Asian Tour member James Kingston
of South Africa was in contention at the halfway stage after adding
a 69 to his opening round's 65 to lie two shots off the lead.
Australian Terry Pilkadaris, a three-time winner in Asia, was tied
42nd after a 69.
