The Hong Kong Golf Club, Fanling
The
Hong Kong Golf Club is rich in history. It was formed on May 10,
1889 and reached over 100 members by 1891. The Club was used for
various other sports, but in 1911 the Old Course was created and
the New Course was ready to play in November 1931. Through the support
of members, a third course, the Eden, was built in 1970.
The Hong Kong Golf Club has been the home of the Hong Kong Open
since its inception in 1959 and many golfing icons have enjoyed
victory such as Peter Thomson, Mr Lu Liang-huan, Tom
Watson, Nick Faldo and Jose-Maria Olazabal.
For the UBS Hong Kong Open, a selection of the best holes from the
New and Eden courses are used for the Championship. Essentially,
accuracy and course management are at a premium due to the tree-lined
fairways.
The par four 18th hole, with its water hazard fronting the green,
requires nerve and skill in equal measures and is widely regarded
as one of Asia's finest finishing holes. Many Hong Kong Opens have
been won and lost on this daunting 18th.
