Kapur shoots first round 72 in Bridgestone

India’s latest sensation Shiv Kapur shot a two-over-par 72 in the first round of the World Golf Championships – Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio on Thursday.

The 24-year-old fired three birdies against five bogeys as he stood in joint 42nd position in the US$7.5 million star-studded event at the Firestone Country Club.

Starting on the 10th tee, Kapur stumbled to three bogeys on the 13th, 17th and 18th holes and dropped two more shots on the first and six holes. Kapur, who qualified for the event after his win at the Volvo Masters of Asia last December, bounced back in the closing stages with three consecutive birdies at the seventh, eighth and ninth holes.

Korea Choi Kyung-ju shot a 75 as he was in tied 63rd position.

Aussie ace Adam Scott was ahead of the field after a 63 followed by American Jason Gore two strokes off the pace. Defending champion Tiger Woods was in the leading fray when he shot a 67 in joint fourth spot.

On the Nationwide Tour, Korea’s Charlie Wi, the Maybank Malaysian Open winner, was even-par in the opening round at the National Mining Association Pete Dye Classic while Australia’s Jarrod Lyle managed to a 74.
