Yang begins quest for US Tour card
Korea's
Yang Yong-eun begins his quest for a US PGA Tour card when he competes
in the Qualifying School Finals in California on Wednesday.
Yang, who secured a stunning victory at the HSBC Champions in Shanghai
earlier this month where he beat a field that included Tiger Woods
and 10 of the world's top-20 players, is amongst six Asian Tour
stalwarts vying for a top-30 finish in the six-round test.
A three-time winner this season where he also won the Korea Open
and also once in Japan, Yang is hoping to join his more famous compatriot
Choi Kyung-ju in the US.
Prayad Marksaeng, who came through Stage Two, will attempt to become
the first Thai to earn a US PGA Tour card while India's Arjun Atwal
will be looking to regain full playing rights.
Previously, Thongchai Jaidee has made several unsuccessful attempts
at the US Qualifying School.
Atwal, Asia's number one in 2003, has played full time in the US
since 2004 but he finished 140th on the money this season. He still
has conditional status on the PGA Tour which guarantees approximately
15 starts in the new season but the Indian star will be hoping to
gain full exempt with a top finish at the Finals.
Korea's Charlie Wi will attempt to make a quick return after playing
on the world's leading circuit in 2005. American Edward Loar, a
two-time winner on the Asian Tour, and Mike Capone are also in the
field.
