Asian quartet claim joint 12th finishes

A quartet of Asian Tour stars enjoyed tied 12th finishes around the globe on Sunday.

Australian Jarrod Lyle was probably the most disappointed with his finish when he dropped eight rungs from his overnight position at the Fry’s Electronics Open on the US PGA Tour with a final round of one-over-par 73.

Lyle is fighting doggedly to retain his card in the US where his performance saw him improve his position on the money ranking from 177th to 161st. Only the top-125 will retain their cards with two events remaining this season.

Lyle endured the worst possible start by dropping four bogeys after five holes but fought back with an eagle two and successive birdies. Another bogey in a wild front nine saw him turn in at one-over.

The event was won by Canadian Mike Weir, who will star in next month’s UBS Hong Kong Open. Japan’s Daisuke Maruyama, a former winner on the Asian Tour, enjoyed a tied sixth finish on 272.

In the Portugal Masters, Thai star Thongchai Jaidee was equal 12th after shooting rounds of 71, 67, 66 and 69 for a 273 total, 10 shots behind winner Steve Webster. South African James Kingston was a further shot back after closing with a 67 while India’s Jeev Milkha Singh, last year’s UBS Order of Merit champion, settled for a share of 40th place after signing off with a 71 for a 278 total.

Compatriot Shiv Kapur finished 64th on 284.

In the Bridgestone Open in Japan, Thai duo Chawalit Plaphol and Prayad Marksaeng were amongst those who shared 12th place on 276, six shots behind winner Shingo Katayama, who will be amongst the stars heading to next week’s Barclays Singapore Open.

Chawalit ended his week with a 67 while Prayad, who was the joint halfway leader, signed off with a 70.

Chinese Taipei’s Lin Keng-chi finished on 277 to claim tied 18th place.
