Liang to play alongside Vijay Singh and David Toms

Birthday boy Liang Wen-chong will enjoy a dream start at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational as he tees off alongside Major winners Vijay Singh of Fiji and local hero David Toms today.

Liang, who celebrates his 29th birthday today, earned his spot thanks to his win at the Clariden Leu Singapore Masters in March. He has been enjoying a commanding run this season in Asia and currently leads the Asian Tour’s UBS Order of Merit. Surrounded by two world beaters this week, Liang will be eager to emulate his playing partners as he makes his first ever Bridgestone Invitational appearance at the Firestone Country Club.

With 31 wins on the US PGA Tour, Fijian Singh has a proven track record winning the 1998 PGA Championship and the Masters Tournament in 2000 while Toms took the 2001 PGA Championship title.

India's Jeev Milkha Singh, who was last year’s UBS Order of Merit winner, will open his Ohio outing alongside Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, the 2006 Commercialbank Qatar Masters winner, and Hunter Mahan.

Stenson has already chalked up a WGC title this year with his triumph at the Accenture Match Play Championship while Mahan produced his maiden win on the US PGA Tour at the Travelers Championship in June.

Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee, who booked his place at Firestone Country Club when he won the Volvo Masters of Asia in December, will be up against Scotsman Colin Montgomerie and American Nick Watney, who won his first US PGA Tour title at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in April.

South African Anton Haig, who lifted the 2007 Johnnie Walker Classic title, will start his Ohio campaign alongside Fred Funk, who was The Players Championship winner in 2005, and Australian Rod Pampling who finished in the top-10 at the Masters Tournament in the same year.

In-form Korean talent Choi Kyung-ju, with two wins on the US PGA Tour this season, will tee off the opening round with Australia’s Mark Hensby and Mark Calcavecchia while compatriot Yang Yong-eun is up against Chad Campbell and Robert Allenby.

Tiger Woods returns to Ohio to defend his title.
