Wi second at Buick after superb 63
Koreas Charlie Wi got off to a superb start when he blasted
a stunning nine-under-par 63 in the opening round at the Buick Invitational
on Thursday.
Wi, who claimed the Maybank Malaysian Open title last year, soared
to lone second spot when he fired an eagle coupled with eight birdies
against a lone bogey as he stood two strokes adrift leader Brandt
Snedeker of United States.
Australias Andrew Buckle also had a steady opening day when
he shot a 66 in tied 14th spot alongside golf icon Tiger Woods.
Koreas Lee Han trailed the Aussie by a single stroke in joint
24th position while Kevin Na carded five birdies against a lone
bogey in tied 34th place after a 68.
Jarrod Lyle of Australia shot a 70 in tied 59th spot while Swedens
Daniel Chopra, a former Asian Tour regular, had a slow start in
joint 110th place when he shot a 73.
Starting on the back nine, Wi birdied the opening hole before a
dropped shot on the 11th hole. He bounced back with three straight
birdies on the 13th, 14th, and 15th holes and was on a roll firing
his fourth birdie on the 18th hole.
Wi was spot on at the par five first hole as he smashed in an eagle
and coupled with three more birdies, the Korean talent enjoyed a
solid start on the US PGA Tour event.
