Teen star Kiran Matharu to play DLF Women's Indian Open
The
DLF Women's Indian Open received a major boost with the confirmation
of the reigning English Ladies Amateur Champion and European Tour
Star, Kiran Matharu's participation. The 18-year old Matharu subsequently
turned professional and finished third in the Qualifying School
in 2007. She will be playing her first ever pro golf tournament
on Indian soil courtesy DLF Golf & Country Club and British
Airways.
Marharu, the youngest European on the Ladies European Tour who
has represented England right from the under-14's was in 2006 selected
for the Great Britain & Ireland Squads to play against America
at Bandon Dunes GC, Oregon for the Curtis Cup Team. She was the
youngest member from both sides in that Curtis Cup contest. In addition,
Matharu was declared the 'Junior Female Sports Personality of the
Year' at the 'Sony Sports Awards' two years in a row in 2005 and
2006.
"I am very excited about playing in the DLF Women's Indian
Open. I came to India for the first time in December to visit my
family and friends and have been waiting for this tournament as
it will be a very special week for me" she said. "I am
thrilled to play on an LAGT event in India," added Matharu.
She was also full of praise for the efforts of the Women's Golf
Association of India (Professional Golf) in promoting the cause
of Indian sportswomen and contributing towards getting a world-class
women's professional golf event to Indian shores.
Matharu adds further flavour to what is a full strength field with
over 70 international participants competing. The tournament commences
at the DLF Golf & Country Club on 14 March and concludes on
16 March 2007.
