Choi begins his 2007 campaign in Hawaii
Korean
strongman Choi Kyung-ju begins his 2007 campaign at the season-opening
Mercedes Championship in Hawaii on Thursday where he will shoot
for a fifth US PGA Tour title.
The Asian star has been drawn to hit the first tee shot of the new
season in America and will play his opening round of the winners'
only tournament alongside world number four Adam Scott, the reigning
Barclays Singapore Open champion.
A total of 34 winners are competing in the event.
Last season, Choi secured a fourth US Tour title at the Chrysler
Championship en route to finishing in 27th place on the money list,
which guarantees him entry into the Majors this season.
He enjoyed a consistent year where he made 22 cuts out of 26 starts
in the US and Choi will be looking to build on that form in his
hopes of securing a first Major triumph by an Asian-born player.
He finished third in the US Masters in 2004, three strokes behind
winner Phil Mickelson and the Korean has always maintained that
it is at Augusta National Golf Club that he feels he has the best
chance of securing his biggest career victory. He was also tied
seventh in the US PGA Championship, the season's final Major, last
year.
