World Cup: Six teams to watch
South Africa (Retief Goosen and Trevor Immelman)
The South Africans will start as one of the contenders for the Omega Mission Hills World Cup title. Goosen is ranked 25th in the world while Immelman is 22nd. Both players have also won the World Cup previously, although with different partners but they will be expected to feature prominently on the leaderboard this week.
India (Jyoti Randhawa and Gaurav Ghei)
The Indian duo are enjoying superb seasons with one victory each. Ghei is in the top-10 of the Asian Tour’s UBS Order of Merit while Randhawa did well in Europe where he finished in the top-40 of the money ranking. Both are solid players and are expected to do well in Mission Hills.
England (Justin Rose and Ian Poulter)
This English combination is tipped to sparkle. Rose claimed Europe’s Order of Merit after winning the season ending Volvo Masters in Spain recently while Poulter won in Japan at the weekend. They are good friends as well and are excited about their first partnership in the World Cup.
Thailand (Thongchai Jaidee and Prayad Marksaeng)
The Thais were scintillating when they won the Fortis International Challenge, the qualifying event for the Omega Mission Hills World Cup, with a 30-under-par winning total. Thongchai is also in form after finishing tied second in the UBS Hong Kong Open at the weekend while Prayad has enjoyed another strong season on the Asian Tour and in Japan with multiple top-10s.
Scotland (Colin Montgomerie and Marc Warren)
The Scots finished runner-up last year when they lost to Germany in a play-off. Montgomerie’s credentials are impressive as he is an eight-time European Order of Merit winner while Warren is one of the continent’s rising stars.
China (Liang Wen-chong and Zhang Lian-wei)
The local duo should be inspired to deliver a strong performance on home soil. This is their second time competing in the World Cup as a pair after finishing tied 17th in the Japan edition in 2001. Liang is enjoying a stellar year where he has won once and posted eight other top-10s while veteran Zhang is enjoying a good year as well.
