Storming back nine gets Bain through to weekend

Scotsman Ross Bain enjoyed a Major high on Friday when he comfortably made the halfway cut in his British Open debut with a second round 71.

The gallant effort put the Asian Tour regular into the weekend rounds with his two-day total of two-over-par 144.

Bain, who fired a 73 in the opening round, looked to be heading out of the year’s third Major after turning in 39 but he brilliantly stormed home in 32 with five birdies and two bogeys.

He can expect strong support from the local crowds and the media, as leading Scottish lights Paul Lawrie, the 1999 Carnoustie Open Champion and Colin Montgomerie both failed to make it into the weekend.

Australians Adam Groom, Peter Folwer and David Gleeson, all members of the Asian Tour, failed to make the weekend cut.
