New Open sponsors illustrate golf's growth in Philippines

The Philippine Open is gearing up for another memorable edition this week with the inclusion of 11 new main sponsors, officials announced today.

ICTSI, San Miguel, Philippine Airlines, PLDT, Srixon, Motorola, Taise Shimizu, Hanjin, Takenaka, JAC and Aboitiz have all pledged their support towards the staging of Asia’s eldest national Open which is set to tee off at Wack Wack Golf and Country Club from Thursday.

The inclusion of the 11 sponsors reiterates the positive growth of the sport in the country. All the sponsors are companies endorsed and supported by The First Gentleman Foundation.

“The Philippine Open is rich in history and steep in tradition and we are glad to announce the involvement of ICTSI, San Miguel, Philippine Airlines, PLDT, Srixon, Motorola, Taise Shimizu, Hanjin, Takenaka, JAC and Aboitiz as their support reflects the wonderful development of golf in the Philippine,” said Asian Tour Executive Chairman Kyi Hla Han.

“The National Golf Association of the Philippines, together with the support of all the sponsors, have all shown tremendous commitment in ensuring that the Philippine Open remains as one of Asia’s most eagerly awaited event.

“We can expect another memorable week as some of the region’s best will grace the course at the Wack Wack which has proven to be a fitting venue,” he added.

The Philippine Open welcomes the return of defending champion Scott Strange of Australia. The other top guns that will be present include Thailand’s Thaworn Wiratchant, who is an eight-time winner on the Asian Tour, former winners Adam Le Vesconte and Edward Michaels and local heroes Juvic Pagunsan who was Asian Tour’s Rookie of the Year in 2006, and Frankie Minoza.

The Philippine Open is the third leg of this year’s Asian Tour Schedule which will stage no fewer than 29 events with a total prize fund of more than US$26.5 million.
