Going Head to Head

A new weekly series which pits the Asian Tour's stars against each other through a variety of identical questions.

Ross Bain v. Simon Yates

How do you warm up?

Bain: I would usually do a 30 minute warm up. I would start with the sand wedge, seven irons, some four irons and driver.

Yates: I would go to the driving range and start with the sand wedge, nine iron, seven iron and so on, followed by a couple of two woods and then the driver.

What do you do after completing a round?

Bain: Depends on the food and time of day but normally I will get on the bus and go home.

Yates: Straight on the bus and head home.

It takes 45 minutes to get from hotel to golf course. How do you kill the time in the bus?

Bain: Sleep. I enjoy reading too so I spend some time reading on the bus.

Yates: I would have my i-pod on and listen to some good music.

What's the worst thing that you fear when you are playing?

Bain: Finishing last. I don’t want to finish at the back of the pack.

Yates: What I don’t like is when I hit a great shot, the ball lands on the green, but it rolls way off and I get an impossible up and down. Besides that, I don’t have any fears.

You've just shot a 65. What will you do after the round?

Bain: Absolutely nothing different as my game worked out well.

Yates: I would go home after a round like that.

How about after a round of 80?

Bain: It doesn’t change. I don’t think it would make a difference after a round like that.

Yates: Go home, as there is nothing I can do to change that.

You have two putts from 10 feet for par to win a title. Do you go for glory with a birdie?

Bain: Not necessarily. If it’s downhill, then definitely no.

Yates: Certainly not. I might want to get it close to the pin for a simple tap in.

What do you think of when you face a downhill 5-foot putt?

Bain: Please go in!

Yates: Hit it soft.

After posting a double bogey, what are your thoughts at the next tee?

Bain: Let’s not make another double bogey.

Yates: Hit it hard.

There's water on the right and OB on the left. How do you approach this next tee shot to a par-4 480 yard hole being in position for a top-five finish?

Bain: Stick to my game plan from the start of the week. I’ll be unaffected.

Yates: I will be focused and hope to swing it right.

Will you speak to your playing partners if you're in contention on the back nine on Sunday?

Bain: Yes definitely.

Yates: Sure, of course I would love to. I like to talk to players on course.

If you are drawn to play with Tiger Woods, how do you think you'll react playing with him?

Bain: Not much of a difference compared to any other player. I will be a little nervous to start with but generally the same.

Yates: Nervous in the first couple of holes but I will be fine after that. You are playing with the number one player in the world, and you’re bound to be nervous. But if you’re friends with him, then it would be different.

You're playing in the Pro-am and one of your amateurs can't hit the ball at all. What will do you do?

Bain: I would usually suggest them to pick up the ball and place it where we are up front.

Yates: Encourage them and hopefully they can hit it better. Provide them with tips as well and see if they can improve.
