About the Shishido Hills Country Club
Located
amongst the forests of Kasama in Ibaraki Prefecture, the Shishido
Hills Country Club has now become the home of UBS Japan Golf Tour
Championship, one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in Japanese
mens golf.
Having first opened its doors in 1974, course architect Akira Hatsuwa
was responsible for crafting the superb West and East layouts that
wind through the local forests. In keeping with its reputation,
the more famed West (Nishi) Course has been host venue to the Japan
Golf Tour Championship since 2003.
Set about 90 minutes northeast of Tokyo, Shishido Hills is easily
accessible from the city, and provides a stunning home for the event
and fans.
The club offers two 18 holes courses. The Higashi (East) course
is a typical forest course, which features spacious and flat fairways
lined by ancient trees, while the Nishi (West) Course is more strategic
than the East, featuring undulating fairways, well- placed bunkers,
lakes and large greens.
For the players, the West Course (which hosts the Tour Championship)
is anything but simple. The true test comes at the signature par-four
17th hole. Measuring 470 yards, its beauty belies its ferociousness
as the hardest hole on the course. In 2005, it averaged more than
half a stroke above par at 4.573, while also being the most difficult
hole in 2004 and 2003.
