Teenager, veterans and amateur among Singapore qualifiers
Asian Tour veterans Scott Taylor of the United States and Ahmad Dan Bateman of Canada used their vast experience to shoot matching four-under-par 68s and qualify for the US$4 million Barclays Singapore Open on Monday.
The duo were a shot behind Thai teenager Pavit Tangkamolprasert, reigning Philippine Amateur Open champion Anthony Fernando and Australian Nathan Uebergang who headed the 103-player field with 67s on the Tanjong Course at Sentosa Golf Club.
Five more players from a field of more than 100 will qualify on Tuesday for the Barclays Singapore Open over the par-71 Serapong Course from November 1-4.
The 46-year-old Bateman was surprised at his success as he was playing just his seventh round in 12 months.
“I am working as head professional at the Empire Hotel in Brunei and as it is a short haul flight I came over here for a bit of vacation and to see old friends from the Tour,” said Bateman, who played on the Asian Tour for more than a decade.
“Once I teed it up I had four million reasons to do well.”
Taylor is a lowly 166th on the Asian Tour’s UBS Order of Merit this year with earnings of just US$2,590 but gave himself a shot at a big cheque with a composed 68.
“My game has not been far away for a while,” said the 48-year-old Taylor, who has played on the Tour since 1995. “If you look at my results they suggest I have played awful but I have actually played quite well. Having days like today are pretty encouraging.”
Eighteen-year-old Pavit, the latest in a long line of promising players to emerge from Thailand, rode a hot putter to his 67.
“I holed from 20 foot for a birdie at my first hole (the 10th) and sunk one from 30 yards at the 16th,” said Pavit, who turned professional last December after representing Thailand in the Asian Games in Doha.
“I was hitting my irons close and gave myself a lot of chances for birdies. I am so surprised to have won a place in the Barclays Singapore Open as I have been a pro for just 10 months. It is a great opportunity for me.”
Uebergang was playing in the last group of the day and birdied the last two holes to qualify.
“It does not get any better than that,” said the 24-year-old Queenslander. “I birdied the last two and did not have to wait around to see if I had qualified. It is a great feeling.”
The qualifiers join an elite field including world number two Phil Mickelson of the United States, two-time defending champion Adam Scott of Australia, three-time Major champions Ernie Els and Vijay Singh and Korea’s Choi Kyung-ju, a winner twice on the PGA Tour this season.
