British Master Westwood to play Singapore Open

The organisers of the Barclays Singapore Open today confirmed the return of Ryder Cup hero Lee Westwood to Asia’s richest national Open. To be held at the Sentosa Golf Club from November 1-4, Westwood’s current form and familiarity with the course puts him in good stead for the tournament.

Fresh from his win at the Quinn Direct British Masters at The Belfry, his second trophy of the year after the European Tour title at the Valle Romano Open de Andalucia in May, Westwood’s 18th European Tour win makes him the second most successful Englishman behind Nick Faldo.

The popular Englishman’s entry along with four of the world’s top 10 players adds to the glittering array of world-class players who will take on the newly-revamped Serapong course at the Sentosa Golf Club for the US$4 million Asian Tour event.

Bob Tan, chairman of the Barclays Singapore Open Steering Committee said, “We’re delighted to welcome Lee back to the Barclays Singapore Open. He’s made many friends here in the past, and has played some very good golf. He was runner up in 2005, and with his current form, one would expect him to be among the top contenders.”

Westwood, currently ranked 35th in the world, is showing a resurgence of the form that saw him play such a key role in the European team victories in the 2004 and 2006 Ryder Cups. At the latest Ryder Cup, Westwood justified his selection by not losing a game – a feat he had also achieved in 2004’s Ryder Cup. The Englishman has also posted three other top 10 finishes this year.

Westwood will find this year’s competition challenging as the tournament currently boosts a strong field of well-known players including four of the world’s top 10 players such as two-time defending champion Adam Scott (no. 6), Phil Mickelson (no. 2), Ernie Els (no. 5) and Choi Kyung-ju (no. 10). Other noteworthy players include Vijay Singh (no.12), Angel Cabrera (no. 19), Nick O’Hern (no.36) and Shingo Katayama (no.63).
