Miyamoto and Shinozaki earn Singapore Open berths

Japan’s Katsumasa Miyamoto and Norio Shinozaki have earned the chance to take on the goliaths of world golf after prevailing in the Barclays Singapore Open – Japan Qualifying Round on Monday.

Miyamoto, a six-time winner on the Japan Golf Tour, fired a four-under-par 68 to win medallist honours at the Shinyo Country Club while Shinozaki defeated Tadahisa Inoue in the first hole of a sudden-death play-off to earn the second ticket to Singapore after both players carded matching 69s.

The Barclays Singapore Open, which will be held from November 1-4, offers US$4 million in total prize money and has attracted a stellar field that includes two-time defending champion Adam Scott of Australia, world number two Phil Mickelson of the United States, South African star Ernie Els, US Open champion Angel Cabrera of Argentina and three-time Major champion Vijay Singh of Fiji.

“I’ve been given this great chance to play in the Barclays Singapore Open and I intend to finish amongst the top-10,” said the 35-year-old Miyamoto.

Shinozaki, who has won once in Japan, said he hopes to challenge the top names in Singapore. “It’s a great opportunity to play in the Barclays Singapore Open and I hope to make my presence felt there.”

This was the first time that organisers of the Barclays Singapore Open, Asia’s richest national Open, has expanded its qualifying to Japan.

A second qualifier will be held at the Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore on October 29 and 30. No fewer than five spots will be at stake in Singapore.

The Barclays Singapore Open is a full-field Asian Tour event.
