Milkha Singh wrapped up his US Open campaign on Sunday with a five-over-par
75 as he enjoyed his best finish yet in a Major.
The Indian star, last year's UBS Order of Merit champion, ended
a tough week in a share of 36th place at Oakmont Country Club with
a four-round total of 18-over-par 298, some 13 shots behind winner
Angel Cabrera of Argentina.
World number one Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk shared second place,
a shot behind Cabrera after closing with a 70 and 72 respectively.
Singh maintained his proud streak of having played in all four rounds
in all his four Major appearances to date and his finish on Sunday
bettered by one spot his previous best outing of equal 37th place
at this year's US Masters.
Winner of four titles last season, Singh battled courageously on
a tough Oakmont course and dropped six bogeys against a lone birdie
in his final round.
"Every day, I think if you lose your head out there, I think
you're done with. You're going to put up a big number," said
Singh, who added that he wasn't pleased with his putting all week.
American Dean Wilson, a former regular in Asia, finished tied 51st
in the year's second Major after wrapping up his campaign with a
75, to go with earlier rounds of 76, 74 and 76.
In the Open de St Omer, Asian Tour member Peter Fowler of Australia
finished tied second after rounds of 70, 67, 72 and 70, three shots
behind winner Carl Suneson of Spain. Another Tour member Simon Nash,
also from Australia, came in equal 16th on 286.ley shot a 70 to
hold a two-shot lead on 212.
