Choi shoots 71 as Liang has ups and downs
Choi
Kyung-ju launched his quest for Major glory at the 89th PGA Championship
with an opening round of one-over-par 71 on Thursday.
The effort left him five shots behind surprise leader Graeme Storm
of England. The Korean star, a product of the Asian Tour, dropped
two bogeys against a lone birdie for a share of 23rd place alongside
world number one Tiger Woods at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa,
Oklahoma.
Chinas Liang Wen-chong, currently leading the Asian Tours
UBS Order of Merit, started his maiden Major appearance on a strong
note by going to two under through his opening four holes but endured
a run of bogeys in mid-round to settle for a 73 which left him in
tied 53rd place.
Englands Simon Dyson was tied alongside Liang after the opening
round of the years fourth and final Major, with Korean Yang
Yong-eun a further stroke back.
Indias Jeev Milkha Singh, the reigning UBS Order of Merit
champion, turned in one-under but endured a difficult back nine
where he came home in 42, highlighted by a triple bogey and a double
bogey.
It wasnt a good day as well for Thai star Thongchai Jaidee
who slumped to an 80 while Indias Jyoti Randhawa withdrew
due to illness.
