Choi shoots 71 as Liang has ups and downs

Choi Kyung-ju launched his quest for Major glory at the 89th PGA Championship with an opening round of one-over-par 71 on Thursday.

The effort left him five shots behind surprise leader Graeme Storm of England. The Korean star, a product of the Asian Tour, dropped two bogeys against a lone birdie for a share of 23rd place alongside world number one Tiger Woods at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

China’s Liang Wen-chong, currently leading the Asian Tour’s UBS Order of Merit, started his maiden Major appearance on a strong note by going to two under through his opening four holes but endured a run of bogeys in mid-round to settle for a 73 which left him in tied 53rd place.

England’s Simon Dyson was tied alongside Liang after the opening round of the year’s fourth and final Major, with Korean Yang Yong-eun a further stroke back.

India’s Jeev Milkha Singh, the reigning UBS Order of Merit champion, turned in one-under but endured a difficult back nine where he came home in 42, highlighted by a triple bogey and a double bogey.

It wasn’t a good day as well for Thai star Thongchai Jaidee who slumped to an 80 while India’s Jyoti Randhawa withdrew due to illness.
