Superb Simon shoots 64 for sixth

Asian Tour member Simon Dyson of England enjoyed his best finish in a Major when a superb final round of six-under-par 64 propelled him to tied sixth place at the 89th PGA Championship on Sunday.

Dyson completed his week at Southern Hills Country Club in 280, eight shots behind winner Tiger Woods, who successfully defended his title and claimed a career 13th Major success, five shy of Jack Nicklaus’ all-time record.

The Englishman, who is currently fifth on the Asian Tour’s UBS Order of Merit, benefited from a two-week break before the year’s final Major and surged up the leaderboard with a seven-birdie haul.

“I put my clubs away for two weeks and didn’t touch them. I didn’t do anything really other than go to the gym, have a few nights out with my mates and take my girlfriend away for a few days,” said Dyson.

“I took the break because I think I had played something like 24 tournaments and had only two weeks off in three months. Nothing felt good. My head was somewhere it shouldn’t have been. I thought I needed to recharge the batteries and get my appetite back.

“I came back to started practising again and it actually felt pretty good. Today’s round, though, is a dream come true. My six iron to the last was probably my best shot of the day and I knew that I had a chance to get back to level par. To shoot 64 here is really special.”

Korea’s Choi Kyung-ju finished up the week in tied 12th place after signing for a 72 on Sunday, highlighted by three bogeys against a lone birdie. It was a disappointing finish for Choi as he had wanted to give Woods a run for his money.

Woody Austin finished second, two behind the winner, with Ernie Els settling for third place.
