Going Head to Head

A new weekly series which pits the Asian Tour's stars against each other through a variety of identical questions.

Yasin Ali v. Scott Hend

How do you warm up?

Hend: I hit a couple of sand irons, wedge, eight iron, six, four, five, seven and nine irons and then a couple of lob wedges and sand irons again.

Yasin: Stretching exercises on the range and then hit all my wedges followed by my irons and lastly my three wood and driver.

What do you do after completing a round?

Hend: Go to the locker room then have a stretch and head for lunch. If it’s a long week, I won’t go to the range.

Yasin: I would locate the players lounge and find something to eat!

It takes 45 minutes to get from hotel to golf course. How do you kill the time in the bus?

Hend: Leave three hours before my tee time. On the bus, I will listen to my cds, enjoy the view outside or sleep.

Yasin: I listen to the Quran. It’s on my i-pod and listening gets me in a good frame of mind.

What's the worst thing that you fear when you are playing?

Hend: Not meeting my own expectations.

Yasin: Getting hit by an errant shot. I was hit a couple of times. I was hit when I was 13 years old. The ball bounced and hit me on the chest.

You've just shot a 65. What will you do after the round?

Hend: Play poker with the boys and relax. Don’t do anything if you’re playing well.

Yasin: Figure out why I didn’t shoot 64. I always believe I can do better.

How about after a round of 80?

Hend: I’ll go to the putting green or range.

Yasin: Go practice and find out why I shot 80. I am always trying to figure things out.

You have two putts from 10 feet for par to win a title. Do you go for glory with a birdie?

Hend: If it’s uphill, leave it six feet short and hole a six footer so people would think
you’re good. If it’s downhill, I will try for a simple tap in.

Yasin: Give it a nice little roll but it’s not going to be running to fast. Probably will take the two putt.

What do you think of when you face a downhill 5-foot putt?

Hend: Try to use the front half of the hole.

Yasin: Oh Lord, please save me! That’s the first thing. Basically just focus on the line and keep your head down and put a gentle roll on it. Don’t think too much.

After posting a double bogey, what are your thoughts at the next tee?

Hend: I will focus on the immediate shot at hand. The next shot is more important than the previous shot.

Yasin: Lately, I’ve been getting frustrated. But now, I forget about it and clear my mind.

There's water on the right and OB on the left. How do you approach this next tee shot to a par-4 480 yard hole being in position for a top-five finish?

Hend: Take the strongest club in my bag, the driver, and aim for the middle of the fairway.

Yasin: Try and find the yardage to the widest point of the fairway and play to that. Failing that, hit it low and try to control it.

Will you speak to your playing partners if you're in contention on the back nine on Sunday?

Hend: All the time. No problem, it’s only golf.

Yasin: Depends. I wouldn’t go up and make conversation. If the person would like to chat, I’m all ears. I’m 50/50. I can keep quiet or chat, I don’t mind.

If you are drawn to play with Tiger Woods, how do you think you'll react playing with him?

Hend: The same I would react with any other regular bloke down the street. He has a lot of wins but he is still another golfer.

Yasin: He’s human at the end of the day. I just got to approach it that way. He is a phenomenal player but if you keep thinking about him, you might forget about yourself.

You're playing in the Pro-am and one of your amateurs can't hit the ball at all. What will do you do?

Hend: Try and help him out as much as possible. I hope to make him feel good about his game.

Yasin: I’d asked them to have fun and make sure they get the basics right like having a decent grip and good posture.
