Ogilvy and Scott confirmed for OneAsia Australian Open
The first ground-breaking visit of OneAsia Down Under this year for the Australian Open has been boosted with the confirmation that Geoff Ogilvy and Adam Scott will grace the fairways.
Ogilvy and Scott, both six-time winners on the US PGA Tour, will bid to win the tournament for the first time and add the prestigious trophy to their impressive resumes.
The US$1 million Australian Open will be played at New South Wales Golf Club from December 3 to 6 and forms the penultimate leg on what is the inaugural season of OneAsia. The Australian Open is immediately followed by the US$1 million Australian PGA Championship at the Hyatt Regency Coolum, the final event on the 2009 OneAsia calendar.
Ogilvy, the 2006 US Open champion who is currently ranked eighth in the world, and Scott will be joined by former winners of the Australian Open Aaron Baddeley, John Senden and Greg Chalmers.
Five time winner Greg Norman, who finished in a tie for 4th at the US Senior Open last weekend, also recently announced he would compete which is great timing for the tournament as it opens a new chapter in its rich history.
Golf Australia CEO Stephen Pitt said: “We are committed to having our best Australian golfers play at New South Wales Golf Club on the stunning cliffs at La Perouse.”
OneAsia was launched this year so that for the first time the region can boast a professional circuit that traverses the whole Asia-Pacific region. Six tournaments are scheduled to be played this year, with Australian Scott Strange claiming the opening event when he won the Volvo China Open in Beijing in April. OneAsia seeks to grow this schedule to 12 – 15 events in 2010 and 17 to 20 in 2011, to ultimately create a true career pathway for tournament professional golfers in Asia-Pacific.
“Everyone involved with OneAsia is looking forward to playing our first tournament in Australia. We are at the beginning of an important journey for golf in our region and we are delighted with the support of the top Australians returning to play in their national Open,” said Ben Sellenger, PGA Tour of Australasia Commissioner and representative of OneAsia.
“We now look forward to complementing the best Australian players with the best players from across Asia.”
