Vijay Singh to contest Australian PGA title
Three-time Major winner Vijay Singh is the next big name to have signed on to play the Australian PGA Championship presented by Coca-Cola.
The US$1.2 million tournament will be held at the Hyatt Regency Coolum on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast from December 10 to 13.
Singh’s inclusion in the field comes hot on the heels of the announcements that defending champion Geoff Ogilvy will also be returning, as will crowd favourite John Daly.
The Fijian cut his professional teeth playing in Asia and with the Australian PGA Championship forming the season-ending event on the newly launched OneAsia his participation is particularly fitting.
OneAsia was set up this year so that for the first time there is a Tour that unites the whole Asia-Pacific region. Five events will be staged in 2009 while 12 to 15 are planned for next season.
The next event is the Kolon-Hana Bank Korean Open in September – a tournament that Singh claimed in 2007.
The world number 13 will be returning to Australian shores for the first time since he was part of the victorious International Team that claimed the Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne in 1998.
“It’s been a long time since I played in Australia and I am so excited to have been asked to play the Australian PGA Championship,” said Singh. “I have always intended to return to Australian shores and when I got the offer to play, I jumped at the chance.”
Winner of 34 US PGA Tour events and with a further 22 international victories to his name, the 46 year old widely known for his incredible work ethic will line up at the PGA of Australia’s flagship event for the very first time.
“Vijay is a world class player and will be a major drawcard for Australian fans who have not had the opportunity to see him play here before,” said Max Garske, CEO of the PGA of Australia.
“It’s obviously been a while since he played an Australasian Tour event in Australia so the fact that we have been able to secure him for the final event of the season is a major coup and we couldn’t be happier.”
