Asian Tour referees confirm their credentials

The Asian Tour referees will enter the Worldwide Selangor Masters with renewed knowledge having completed the rules and timing test at the Seri Selangor Golf Club on Saturday.

David Parkin, who is the Asian Tour’s Director of Operations, believes that the high standards of ruling practiced by the Asian Tour referees is reflected through their involvement in Major events around the world.

“Yingsak Hantawongs had the best score of 97.2 percent in the exam which shows the high standards of our Asian Tour referees.

“The purpose of the exam is to further enhance the knowledge of our referees on the rules of golf and tournament operations. We also conducted discussions on local rules standard at Asian Tour events and practices such as methods of timing and tournament operation duties,” said Parkin.

Parkin became the first Asian Tour referee to be invited as a rules official at this year’s US Open. Parkin has been refereeing on many top level tournament around the world that include the Presidents Cup, US Masters, British Open and the World Golf Championship events.

There are a total of four Asian Tour Tournament Directors and eight panel referees. Thailand’s Wanchai Meechai is among the prominent Thai referees on the Asian Tour. Wanchai had previously attended the British Open in 2004 and most recently the 2007 WGC – Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio.

“Malaysia’s Kamarulzaman made his way to Scotland last year for the British Open in Carnoustie. Our referees also get invited to the World Golf Championship events, US Masters, The Players Championship and the Presidents Cup.

“Our referees have represented Asian Tour in events all around the world. The Tour is growing and with an increase in the number of tournaments, we now hope to add two or three more new referees to our panel,” added Parkin.
