Randhawa and Wang reach million dollar milestones on Order of Merit

Indian star Jyoti Randhawa and Chinese Taipei veteran Wang Ter-chang hit new career milestones when they broke the US$2 million and US$1 million barrier respectively in career earnings on the Asian Tour.

Thanks to top-10 performances at the recently-concluded Enjoy Jakarta Astro Indonesia Open on Sunday, the duo raked in US$30,960 each after finishing tied seventh at Cengkareng Golf Club.

Randhawa, a former Asian Tour number one, raised his total career earnings to US$2,009,509 and became only the second player after Thai star Thongchai Jaidee to surpass US$2 million. Thongchai leads the career earnings chart with US$2,605,237.

The 35-year-old Randhawa, a six-time winner in Asia, extended his steady start to the year where he picked up US$26,000 from the season-opening Emaar-MGF Indian Masters two weeks ago and maintained his momentum in Jakarta where he closed with a superb eight-under-par 62.

The 45-year-old Wang showed that age is not a barrier by enjoying a strong start in 2008. His career earnings of US$1,003,436 made Wang only the second Chinese Taipei player after Lu Wen-teh to join the exclusive Asian Tour’s Million Dollar Club.

On the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit race, there was a significant Indian flavour in the top-five following Jeev Milkha Singh’s rise into second place. Singh, the 2006 Asian Tour number one, earned US$$133,330 after finishing second in Indonesia.

Compatriot S.S.P Chowrasia remained firmly on top of the rankings with US$416,660 following his stunning victory at the Emaar-MGF Indian Masters two weeks ago.

Thailand’s Prom Meesawat moved to fourth place on the Order of Merit thanks to his third place result in Jakarta. With US$81,060 in the bank this season, the burly Thai lurks behind third ranked Indian player Digvijay Singh.

The other steady movers were India’s Gaurav Ghei in fifth place on the money list while New Zealander Mark Brown is in sixth spot. After his performance on Sunday, Randhawa was ranked seventh and is a mere US$220 ahead of Arjun Atwal who is eighth.

The Asian Tour moves back to India for the inaugural Sail Open Golf Championship at Jaypee Greens Resort, which is located on the outskirts of New Delhi. The US$400,000 tournament, which will be headlined by Chowrasia and last year’s Order of Merit champion Liang Wen-chong of China, will begin on Wednesday instead of the customary Thursday start.
