Anton Haig in share of Qatar lead

Asian Tour member Anton Haig grabbed a share of the opening round’s lead in the Commercialbank Qatar Masters with a five-under-par 67 on a blustery Thursday.

The big-hitting South African, who finished third in last year’s Asian Tour’s Order of Merit, showed a welcome return to form to head the field alongside English Ryder Cup star Lee Westwood.

India’s Jyoti Randhawa began his campaign with a solid 70 followed by Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee and Australian Scott Strange, who carded matching 71s. India’s Shiv Kapur and Chapchai Nirat of Thailand, second last year on the merit list, shot 73s.

In the Buick Invitational, Korean Jin Park carded a 71 to trail first round leader Troy Mattesson by six shots. Compatriot Choi Kyung-ju carded a 72 while Yang Yong-eun was a further two shots back.
