2008 Faldo Series Asia schedule to add Shanghai date

Nick Faldo today announced the Faldo Series Asia schedule for 2008 which features a total of 11 tournaments in 8 different territories, including a new championship in Shanghai, taking the number of events in mainland China alone to four.

Supported by Mission Hills, The R&A and UBS, the Faldo Series Asia will make its Shanghai debut in July at the prestigious Shanghai Silport Golf Club, host to last year’s Volvo China Open. This will be the first of four tournaments in mainland China, the last being the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final at Mission Hills Golf Club in Shenzhen which has been pushed back to March 2009 in order to accommodate the expanding schedule.

Also backed by Korn/Ferry, the Faldo Series Asia welcomes new venues Singapore Island Country Club and Thailand’s Watermill Golf and Gardens near Bangkok to its roster as well. Completing the 2008 schedule are returns to Chinese Taipei’s Sunrise Golf and Country Club; the Faldo Course at Mission Hills, China; the Faldo-designed Lakeview Golf Club in China’s Yunnan Province; Damai Indah Golf’s BSD Course in Jakarta; and Poona Golf Club in Pune, India. Venues for the FSA Malaysia Final, set to feature pre-qualifying tournaments, and the FSA Hong Kong Championship are to be announced.

Six-time Major winner Faldo commented: “In only our third season, I’m delighted that we are set to offer more openings for more talented golfers in so many parts of Asia. Not only that, we will continue to create access to the game for younger children at a grass-roots level as we make our way across the region. This opportunity to help grow golf in Asia and develop the region’s next generation of champions would not be possible without the support of our major partners Mission Hills, The R&A and UBS and our patron Korn/Ferry, plus our other sponsors, the host federations and so many first-class venues.”

Sanctioned by the Asian Tour and the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation, up to six players from each Faldo Series Asia event will qualify for the third Faldo Series Asia Grand Final, an R&A World Amateur Golf Ranking event to be hosted by Faldo in March 2009 (date to be announced) at Mission Hills, venue for the Omega Mission Hills World Cup and home of the Faldo Series Asia. Previous champions include Thailand’s Nakarin Ratanakul and India’s Rashid Khan, both of whom earned invitations from Faldo to the Faldo Series Grand Final in Europe and, courtesy of the Asian Tour, a start in the Volvo Masters of Asia and a scholarship to stage one of Asian Tour Qualifying School.
