Fanling berth on offer for Faldo Hong Kong winner
The stunning North Course at Kau Sai Chau will host the third Faldo Series Asia Hong Kong Championship on November 10-11, when the Special Administrative Region of China’s brightest prospects will be gunning for double glory: a place in the Grand Final hosted by Nick Faldo and the chance to play in the UBS Hong Kong Open.
For the third straight year, the Faldo Series Asia is teaming up with major partner UBS and the Hong Kong Golf Association to give competitors a first-hand experience of professional golf and, for some, the chance to qualify for the star-studded UBS Hong Kong Open at the Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling on November 20-23.
Run in conjunction with the official qualifier for the UBS Hong Kong Open, competitors in the Faldo Series Asia Hong Kong Championship at Kau Sai Chau, boys and girls aged 12 to 21, will play in the same field as professionals and senior amateurs alike.
Furthermore, those players with a handicap of three or less will have the chance to claim one of the amateur spots on offer at the UBS Hong Kong Open, a feat that has been achieved for the past two years by Jimmy Ko.
Supported by Mission Hills, the R&A and UBS, four players from the Hong Kong leg will also qualify for the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final, hosted by Faldo at China’s Mission Hills Golf Club in March 2009.
The six-time Major winner said: “Tournament experience is crucial for the development of young amateurs. The fact that the players in Hong Kong will be teeing up alongside professionals at Kau Sai Chau is a great opportunity and will add to that experience; let alone if they manage to qualify for the UBS Hong Kong Open.”
Also backed by Asian Golf Monthly and Korn/Ferry, the Hong Kong Championship is one of 11 Faldo Series Asia events in 2008/2009, including four in China plus one in each of Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam.
The Faldo Series Asia has also announced two changes to its current schedule: the Indonesia Championship on the Damai Indah Golf BSD Course has been rescheduled for February 3-4, 2009 due to course maintenance; the Thailand Championship has been delayed because of flooding and a new date will be announced in due course.
