Tiger for Malaysia in 2009?

Malaysian sports fans may have a rare chance to watch Tiger Woods in action in the 2009 Malaysian Open Golf Championships if the Mines Resort Golf Club, the venue for next year’s tournament, reach an agreement with the management company of the world No. 1 golfer.

The Malaysian Golf Association (MGA) said it has no objection if the corporate companies are willing to provide the fund to bring in the celebrity player for the Malaysian Open.

“The Mines Resort and Golf Club is still negotiating to bring in Tiger Woods for next year’s championship. But it is MGA’s policy not to pay appearance fee to secure top players for the Malaysian Open as the association did not have the resources to pay for such fee,” MGA said in a statement yesterday.

The task of securing the star-studded player for the Malaysian Open falls within the responsibilities of the tournament promoter, it said.

It is learnt that the appearance fee to bring in Tiger Woods to Malaysia might be around RM3 to RM4 million. The RM6.4 million 2008 Malaysian Open will be held at the Kota Permai Golf and Country Club, Shah Alam, from March 6 to 9. — Bernama
