Mo going for back-to-back victories at Selangor Masters

Korea’s Mo Joong-kyung will be amongst the top stars set to challenge for the Selangor Masters title next month.

Mo ended a 12-year title drought when he lifted the Singha Thailand PGA Championship in June and he will be hoping to pick up from where he left off when the Asian Tour’s second half of the season resumes at Seri Selangor Golf Club from August 6-9.

Other leading Asian Tour players who have entered the Selangor Masters, organised by the Selangor state government, include this season’s winners Hwang Inn-choon of Korea, India’s S.S.P. Chowrasia and Filipino stalwart Angelo Que.

“I’m looking forward to playing in Malaysia. It’ll be after our summer break and hopefully I can pick up from where I left off in Chiang Rai,” said the 36-year-old Mo, whose maiden success in the region came at the 1996 Guam Open.

Mo will be joined by Malaysia’s top stars at the RM1 million (US$310,000) Selangor Masters who include the likes of Asian Tour winners Danny Chia, winner of the 2002 Taiwan Open and Airil Rizman, who lifted the 2006 Pakistan Open. Iain Steel, S. Siva Chandran and Ben Leong are the other top Malaysians in the field of 32 local players.

The Seoul-based star will be eager to get in the title mix again as he believes that the hard work that he has put into the game has reaped its rewards.

“I’m just going to enjoy the moment but I plan to work harder on my game during the summer break and come out stronger for the second half of the year. With my win, there is so much to look forward to for the rest of the season,” said Mo.

The Korean has been one of the pioneers of Asian golf and enjoyed one of his best seasons in 2004 when he produced five top-10s and ended his campaign in 19th place on the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit.

This year, Mo has been a model of consistency, missing only one cut in six appearance prior to his victory in Thailand.

“It was actually quite nice to win in Thailand as I had finished second behind Tiger Woods in the Asian Honda Classic more than 10 years ago,” said Mo. “I’ve worked very hard over the years to get this second win and I’m glad that it has worked out for me.”

The Asian Tour is sanctioning the Selangor Masters which is expected to reach millions of television viewers through a one-hour highlights show beamed via ESPN STAR Sports.

The Selangor Masters is the latest addition to the burgeoning Asian Tour Schedule which will offer a record of 29 tournaments with over US$38 million in total prize money.
