Strong 'Team Thailand' to vie for Selangor Masters
Thai stars Thongchai Jaidee and Thaworn Wiratchant will be hoping to steal the show at the Worldwide Selangor Masters next month.
Thongchai, a two-time Asian Tour number one, and Thaworn, who holds a record 10 titles under his belt, will form a formidable Thai contingent who are tipped to challenge for the top prize at Seri Selangor Golf Club from August 6 to 9.
The Thai duo will be joined by compatriot Chapchai Nirat, who finished second on the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit last season, in-form Filipino Angelo Que and Antonio Lascuna, Chinese Taipei’s Lin Wen-tang and Korea’s Lee Sung in the RM1 million Asian Tour event (US$310,000).
Thongchai, who has eight wins on the Asian Tour and was number one in 2001 and 2004, was dogged by injury and sickness at the start of the year but has shown a welcome return of form and better health in recent times.
He will also relish a return to Malaysia as he is a two-time Malaysian Open champion and has a big fan base in the country.
“I like playing in Malaysia as I’ve had some success there in the past. It’s like a second home to me,” said the former paratrooper.
Compatriot Thaworn has relished his time on the Asian Tour this season, having claimed a record breaking 10th title at the Bangkok Airways Open in June. He was also in the running at the Singha Thailand PGA Championship before finishing in the top-10.
With his magical iron play, the Thai veteran will be hoping to conquer the tricky greens at Seri Selangor.
“I am very pleased with my fitness level and I can’t wait to get started with the second half of the season. The win in Samui has given me the belief for the rest of the year,” said Thaworn, the 2005 Asian Tour number one.
Fresh from his maiden outing in the British Open, Que will be hoping to use his experience from Royal Birkdale to carry him to a second victory this year. Que triumphed at his national Open in April which completed a memorable month as he announced the impending arrival of his first child.
“The experience at the British Open was very good and I enjoyed the experience,” said Que.
“My focus has now shifted from playing for myself to my family which is added motivation in my life. With my success at home, I get to play in the big events and get to choose the tournaments which I want to play in. So I’m looking forward to the rest of the year,” said Que.
Lascuna, who enjoyed a memorable season on the Asian Tour where he enjoyed two top-three finishes, won last year’s Selangor Masters title when the event was only a domestic Malaysian tournament.
With the event now forming part of the burgeoning Asian Tour Schedule, Lascuna will be eyeing for a repeat victory and secure his first Tour victory as well.
