New milestone for Macau

Sports fans and golf enthusiasts in Macau will be treated to a week of quality golf from women professionals at the Macau LAGT Championship presented by Companhia de Telecomunicacoes de Macau (CTM) that begins on Wednesday at the Macau Golf and Country Club here.

The Macau LAGT Championship is the fifth and final event for the first session of the 2006 Ladies Asian Golf Tour (LAGT) calendar. The first event teed off with the US$80,000 Hongkong Ladies Masters in February. The second event – Thailand Ladies Open that offered a prize purse of US100,000 was held at the Pattana Golf Resort, while Eastwood Valley Golf Golf in Miri, Malaysia, hosted the US$100,000 Malaysian Ladies Open. The forth event – US$80,000 Orient Golf Zhuhai Open was held last week at the Orient Zhuhai Golf Club.

LAGT President Mrs. Rae-Vadee T. Suwan of Thailand, said among the objectives of the Tour is to build-up female Asian golfers into world-class players, by providing them both the venue and the opportunity to compete with the best in the region.

CTM Chief Executive Officer Phil Green said the company is very honoured to be associated with Ladies Asian Golf Tour.

“More importantly, we are also honoured that the Tour has picked Macau for this final event. We are also proud that CTM is a supporting partner in this showcase that promises an excellent week of golfing from the quality field that we have in this championship,”he said.
Macau Golf Association President Charles Ho said the association is pleased to join LAGT by sanctioning this week’s event.

“We are confident that this Tour has the potential to grow from strength to strength, holding the promise of a bright future. This is an exciting new initiative for us and one which we believe will generate a lot of public interest and inspire more women in Macau to take golf for healthy lifestyles,” he said.
Over 90 women professionals from Thailand, Korea, Japan, Myanmar, US, the Philippines, Brazil, England, Hongkong, China and Chinese Taipei will tee off in the Macau LAGT Championship.

LAGT also has Aylwin Tai of Hongkong as the Chief Executive Officer and Koichi Kato of Japan as Chief Commissioner.
