Liang plans triumphant return for Omega Championship

China 's number one golfer Liang Wenchong has entered the 2006 Omega Championship to show his gratitude to the Omega China Tour for setting on his way to the best summer of his life.

Liang returns for next week's 2006 Omega China Tour season-ending event at Beijing's Tianan Golf Club after a summer that has seen him record four top-five finishes on the Japan Golf Tour and finish as the best Asian at the the US$3 million Barclays Singapore Open.

"I am very grateful to be invited. The Omega China Tour has built a great stage for professional golf in China, it has provided more opportunities for the players ," said the 28-year-old from Zhongshan, Guangdong whose rich vein of form started with his triumph at the Omega China Tour - Hainan Leg in April.

"In my professional career, I have learned from every tournament I played, I improved myself from playing more tournaments in different places. My experiences have taught me that, as a professional golfer, one can only improve your skills through playing more tournaments so that one can get to the peak of his career. The Omega China Tour has provided this opportunity for the Chinese player to play tournaments of an international standard. I believe with the fast-growing economy of China, the Omega China Tour will grow very fast as well. I myself am very supportive of the Tour and I did want to play more of the tournaments, but because lately I have been focusing on the tournaments abroad, I have missed several Omega China Tour events."

Liang's triumph at the Kangle Garden Spa led Zhang Lianwei to pass the torch and concede, for the first time publicly, that his good friend was "the best golfer in China". Bestowed the honour by the man that every Chinese player refers to as "Da Ge" (Oldest Brother), Liang carried it in style going on an impressive run in Japan finishing second at the Fujisankei Classic, third in the Sega Sammy Cup, and fourth in both the Under Armour KBC Augusta and the 'Golf Tournament in Omaezaki' and then finished fourth behind Adam Scott, Ernie Else and Brad Kennedy in Singapore.

"I'm happy for him," said Zhang, who is on the verge of clinching the Omega Order of Merit for the 2006 season.

"As a friend, seeing him perform so well and getting such good results makes me very happy. These kind of results are also very positive for Chinese golf."

At the Omega Championship Liang rejoins the fray for the sixth and final event of a season that Zhang has dominated together with Li Chao, his only surviving rival for the Omega Order of Merit crown. However several other players, such as 25-year-old Huang Mingjie and 27-year-old Yuan Hao have hit form since Liang won the opening leg, and despite his successes in Japan he's expecting some stiff competition.

"I believe the upcoming Omega Championship will see a splendid performance from all the players. I hope all the players and fans will keep supporting the Tour," he said.

After the Omega Championship, Liang will begin his preparations for the HSBC Champions tournament and the Hong Kong Open, he then returns to Japan to play the Casio World Open and the Nippon Series JT Cup, before finishing his year with the Volvo Masters of Asia in Thailand.
