Wi has his sights set on a Volvo
Koreas
Charlie Wi wants to head to next years US PGA Tour with a
victory in the US$650,000 Volvo Masters of Asia on his already impressive
resume.
Wi secured his card for a second stint on the PGA Tour with a joint
16th place finish in the Qualifying School Finals ahead of his appearance
in the Asian Tours season finale at the Thai Country Club.
He opened with rounds of 71 and 69 and started to climb up the leaderboard
during the third round on Saturday with four birdies in 14 holes
before dropping two shots in the final three holes to card a 70
for a three-day total of 210, five behind leader Thongchai Jaidee
of Thailand.
It was a bit of a disappointing finish - I missed the green
with my approach at 16 and then three putted at the last. It was
a tough pin at the 18th today, said Wi, who won the Maybank
Malaysian Open earlier this year, his seventh victory on the Asian
Tour.
The more bogeys you make the tougher it is to catch the leaders
but I am still in with a shout. I would need to shoot seven or eight
under tomorrow (to win) but it is possible.
I am not counting myself out of it at this stage, that is
for sure.
Wi, winner of the Volvo China Open in 2001, said that he was excited
about his imminent return to the PGA Tour after losing his card
in 2005.
It will be a lot of fun - this time around I know what to
expect so I am going into it very much more relaxed, said
the likeable Korean. It is a totally different feeling than
last time.
I would like to win out there - I know it is possible. That
said that is what everyone is looking for. The main priority, of
course, will be holding onto to my card.
I enjoy playing in Asia and I would like to play a few tournaments
back out here in 2007.
