Liang on the cut line waits to know his fate

Chinese star Liang Wen-chong, the current Asian Tour number one, is keeping his fingers crossed that he will squeeze into the weekend rounds of the US$4 million Barclays Singapore Open.

The tenacious 29-year-old walked off the Sentosa Golf Club’s Serapong Course on Friday afternoon thinking that he had missed the halfway cut in Asia’s richest national Open after adding a 72 to his opening 75 for a five-over-par 147 total.

But with 37 players having to return on Saturday morning to complete their second rounds after a 70-minute weather delay, Liang, who is right on the projected cut mark, will be hoping to stay in the lucrative tournament.

Liang was widely tipped to challenge the world’s best players as he has been enjoying a rich vein of form ahead of the star-studded event, winning once and posting eight other top-10s.

He struggled to a 75 on the opening day and continued his frustrating run on Friday with three bogeys against a double bogey for a 72.

Liang, who played alongside Ernie Els and Angel Cabrera, said: “I’m very disappointed with my overall performance these past two days. I just cannot explain what went wrong for me.”

“Obviously this week’s performance is going to affect my standing on the UBS Order of Merit,” said Liang who presently leads with earnings of US$477,950.

Scott Hend, a former US Tour player and currently third on the rankings, was amongst the big-name casualties from the Asian Tour brigade after he struggled to a 10-over-par 152 total.

“I didn’t drive it very well this week. I’ve got a new driver in the bag but even the three wood was erratic. This is hugely disappointing for me,” said Hend.

“I’ll miss several events as I’m slated for the US Tour Qualifying School stage two and will only play again at the Volvo Masters of Asia in December. It’ll be an important event as I want to finish in the top-three to get into the World Golf Championship event.”
