Event Preview - Order of Merit race continues in Indonesia

Four of the top-five players from the Asian Tour’s UBS Order of Merit will be on the hunt this week when they face off at the Pertamina Indonesia President Invitational on Thursday.

China’s top gun Liang Wen-chong, who has made waves this season with his sublime run at the top of the UBS Order of Merit, is hoping to extend his lead from third ranked player Scott Hend of Australia and Thailand’s Chapchai Nirat who will both be eager to close the gap at the Damai Indah Golf, BSD Course in Jakarta.

Scotsman Simon Yates, with six top-10 finishes that include two runner-up results, is also in the mix and will be flanked by Airil Rizman Zahari of Malaysia, Thai youngster Prom Meesawat, Chinese Taipei’s Lu Wei-chih and Mardan Mamat of Singapore.

With a successful track record in Asia, Europe’s Ryder Cup star Lee Westwood will mark his maiden appearance in Indonesia this week and will be a strong contender among the other Asian Tour regulars that include Filipino youngster Juvic Pagunsan, Australia’s Adam Le Vesconte and compatriot Brad Kennedy.

But on top of the list is Liang, after having lifted his maiden title at the Clariden Leu Singapore Masters and a string of solid results this year, the Chinese star will be determined to continue his dominanace in Indonesia as he aims to become the first ever Chinese to claim the number one spot on the UBS Order of Merit by the end of the season.

Third ranked Hend, who has been battling an injury to his right arm, will be on the march hoping to return with the right swing to his game at the par 72 Jack Nicklaus-designed course. Hend produced five top-10 finishes this year before a wrist injury took a toll on his form.

It will be similar approach by Thailand’s Chapchai who will be out for redemption after missing his opportunity to close the gap in India when he finished tied fifth position. The steady Thai lifted his first ever Asian Tour title at the TCL Classic in March and has been in in the forefront throughout the season.

Meanwhile, England’s Chris Rodgers, who won the Pakistan Open last year, is confident of a change in fortune in Indonesia after a slow season this year.

“I was back in the UK the past one and a half weeks to see my coach and help me get back to form. My run has been poor and I have been not really looking forward to tournaments because I’ve not been delivering good results. But since my visit to UK, I have a new outlook and feel really positive about my game. I hope this week will see a turnaround in my game and I will aim to end the season with a decent performance,” said Rodgers.

The Pertamina Indonesia President Invitational will be the 23rd event on this season’s Asian Tour Schedule, which will stage a total of 28 tournaments with over US$27 million in total prize money.

The event is promoted by Ancora Sports - one of Asia’s newest golf promoters and will be sanctioned by the Asian Tour and Indonesian Professional Golf Association (PGPI) and organised by the Indonesian Golf Association (PGI).
