Lee Westwood joins leaders at halfway mark

Ryder Cup star Lee Westwood shot four birdies on the way home for the joint second round lead at the Pertamina Indonesia President Invitational early on Saturday.

Upon returning to complete his second round, the Englishman completed the back nine at the Damai Indah Golf – BSD Course with four birdies for a seven-under-par 65 and rose to the top of the leaderboard alongside American Anthony Kang who fired a similar score. Also in the leading fray was Australian rookie Neven Basic who shot a 67 and Chinese Taipei’s Lu Wei-chih who blasted a 62 on Friday.

A total of 77 returned to course to complete the second round.

A stroke behind the leaders were Filipino youngster Juvic Pagunsan who ended his round with a 67 as he rose to joint fifth position alongside India’s Digvijay Singh at the US$350,000.

Indian rookie Gaganjeet Bhullar birdied his first three holes upon his return on the 16th hole as he completed his round with a solid 64 in a tie for seventh position for a 134 total. He was tied alongside compatriot Harmeet Kahloon who produced a similar run alongside Korea’s Hur-Suk-ho while Thailand’s Prom Meesawat carded a 70 and was in lone 10th position.

Westwood, with success in Japan, Macau and Malaysia, birdied the 11th, 14th, 16th and 18th holes as he adjusted well to the playing conditions at the Jack Nicklaus-designed course.

“I hope to come out quick and shoot another low 60 round in the third round. I was solid upon my return today and if I can keep playing like this, I think I should be in a good position this week,” said Westwood.

Filipino Pagunsan, who was the Asian Tour’s Rookie of the Year in 2006, enjoyed a blemish free round with five birdies while seventh place rookie from India Bhullar blasted eight birdies.

“I returned on the 16th hole and shot three straight birdies, which was nice. I was surprised by how well I played today as I’ve been hitting it solid and my approach shots were on target,” admitted the 19-year-old Bhullar.

Kahloon was pleased to string a second solid round as he hopes to deliver his best result this season.

“I am really happy to be in this position. I’ve kept at it and focused on my game. I hope to adopt this strategy as it seems to be working well this week,” said Kahloon.

A total of 68 players made the weekend cut with the third round teeing off at 10:50am.
