Event Preview - Five to watch this week
The Asian Tour will head to Pattaya, Thailand this week for the inaugural Asian Tour International.
This is a full field Asian tour event, but will also feature 13 regulars from the Japan Golf Tour through sponsor’s invitations, giving it a truly 'international' flavour.
With a tough field lined up at the Pattana Golf and Sports Resort, find out who the leading contenders are this week as they eye the top prize in the US$300,000 tournament.
Thongchai Jaidee
Thongchai Jaidee is a firm favourite whenever events are held in Thailand and this week’s Asian Tour International will be no exception. The former two-time Asian Tour number one gained a week’s rest ahead of the challenges at the Pattana Golf and Sports Resort and will be looking to bounce back to his winning ways at home.
Thaworn Wiratchant
Thaworn Wiratchant will be on the prowl at the Asian Tour International hoping to end his chase for a win on home soil. The 41-year-old stalwart holds the record on the Asian Tour with an unmatched nine titles to his name but he is yet to savour victory in Thailand. With his game growing in strength heading into Pattaya, Thaworn will be a prime contender this week.
Prayad Marksaeng
Prayad Marksaeng will pose a threat to the title race this week having made the cut in his last five events including a top-10 at the elite field Johnnie Walker Classic two weeks ago. Having tasted victory in Bangkok at the season-ending Volvo Masters of Asia, Prayad will be a crowd favourite among the tough field present at the Pattana Golf and Sports Resort.
Scott Hend
Big-hitting Australian Scott Hend will be leading the Australian charge in Thailand. After a runner-up performance in India at the Sail Open, the former US PGA Tour player will be eager to make a comeback to the leading fray having recovered from a nagging wrist injury which had affected his performance last season.
Taichiro Kiyota
Japan’s Taichiro Kiyota is among the top contenders in Pattaya having enjoyed a steady form so far. He is currently ranked eighth on the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit. Competing in his second season on the Asian Tour, the Osaka-based lad will be hoping to notch one better than his runner-up finish at the recently concluded Johnnie Walker Classic.
