Old hands looking to end title drought

A host of Asian Tour stalwarts will be looking to end lengthy title droughts when the new 2008 season begins in India this week.

For many players, the New Year offers new hope as they bid to re-enter the winner’s circle which is becoming increasingly difficult to achieve around the region.

Korean-American Anthony Kang is a two-time winner on the Asian Tour but he has not tasted victory since the 2001 Myanmar Open. Kang enjoyed a strong 2007 season when he posted six top-10s en route to finishing 13th on the Order of Merit.

He will be looking to challenge for honours at the season-opening EMAAR-MGF Indian Masters at Delhi Golf Club this week.

India’s Harmeet Kahlon will be another player looking to end his winless run since his breakthrough triumph at the Hero Honda Indian Masters. The methodical Indian saw a welcome return to form with two top-10s and he will be amongst the strong Indian contingent teeing it up in the US$2.5 million event this week.

Kahlon showed glimpses of his old form by notching up a top-five finish at the Pertamina Indonesia President Invitational and a top-10 in the Johnnie Walker Cambodian Open.

Six years may see like a long wait for Kahlon but he needs to only look at compatriot Gaurav Ghei, who had to endure 11 long years before he registered his second Asian Tour victory in 2006. Ghei has since won a third title in 2007.

Malaysia’ Danny Chia is also in the same pool of Asian Tour regulars who are determined to end their title drought.

Chia enjoyed his career breakthrough when he lifted the 2002 Taiwan Open title but he has since struggled to recapture his winning form.

Other players who are searching for their second wins include Canadian veteran Rick Gibson, who triumphed in the 2002 Philippine Open and Australian David Gleeson, who lifted the 2002 Volvo China Open.
