Hwang and Jun tie for halfway lead
Korea’s Jun Tae-hyun fired a four-under-par 68 and joined early pace setter Hwang In-choon at the top of the field at the halfway stage of the GS Caltex Maekyung Open Golf Championship on Friday.
Jun fired five birdies against a lone bogey for a six-under-par 138 total and finished alongside Hwang, who improved with an impressive 67 at the Nam Seoul Country Club.
The duo hold a one-stroke advantage over in-form teenager Noh Seung-yul who remained in the hunt after a solid 70 and was tied third with overnight leader Kang Ji-man, who slipped off the lead after an even-par performance.
Bae Sang-moon, last season’s winner of the SK Telecom Open, was also a stroke in the US$600,000 Asian Tour event behind the leaders after a 68 together with Park Sung-kook who carded a 70.
Defending champion Kim Kyung-tae returned a 71 to stay firmly in contention in tied seventh place alongside Kim Do-hoon III who recorded his second straight 70 for a 140 total.
Big hitting Australian Scott Hend rose up the rankings, thanks to a hole-in-one at the par three 11th hole en route to a 67 and lies in 14th place on 143.
Starting on the back nine, Jun joined the morning leader Hwang at the top of the field after a solid 68. He was one under after nine holes but closed in strong when he blasted four birdies against one bogey that included two birdies over his closing two holes.
Local amateur Jeong Yeon-jin produced a 71 for a two-day total of 144 alongside Asian Tour’s Rhys Davies of Wales and New Zealander Eddie Lee who posted a 68 and a 72 respectively and were among those in the mix in tied 18th place.
A total of 74 players made the weekend rounds when the cut was set at four-over-par 148.
The 2008 GS Caltex Maekyung Open is the 11th tournament to be staged on the burgeoning Asian Tour Schedule and the second out of three tournaments to be held in Korea this season.
