Five to watch this week

The next stop on the Asian Tour Schedule is the region’s oldest national Open, the Philippine Open. Asiantour.com will now look at the top contenders vying to etch their names on the coveted trophy at Wack Wack Golf and Country Club

Frankie Minoza
Teeing off as the defending champion, the odds will be on Frankie Minoza to produce another stunning week on home soil. The Filipino legend will lead a strong local field at the Wack Wack Golf and Country Club determined to bring cheers to the fans for another home bred winner.

Thaworn Wiratchant
Thai stalwart Thaworn Wiratchant is heading into the Philippine Open filled with optimism. He is riding on good form this season having chalked up three top-20s from seven outings. Backed by a steady game, the former Asian Tour number one will be striving to be the first Thai to claim Asia’s oldest national Open.

Lin Wen-tang
Chinese Taipei’s Lin Wen-tang reinforced his stature in the region when he won his third title in three years at the Asian Tour International in Pattaya. Using experience as an advantage, Lin will also be banking on steady putting to come out with a similar result at the Philippine Open.

Juvic Pagunsan
Having finished runner-up at the 2004 edition as an amateur and posting back-to-back top-10 finishes in the 2005 and 2006 outings, Juvic Pagusan will be among the leading local stars tipped to shine in this year’s Philippine Open. After having claimed his maiden triumph at the Pertamina Indonesia President Invitational last year, Pagunsan knows what it takes to win as he prepares for a title charge at home.

Angelo Que
Angelo Que is an Asian Tour regular who enjoyed a change in fortune having qualified for his first ever British Open on Wednesday. He was twice the Philippine amateur champion and enjoyed a maiden breakthrough on the Asian Tour at the 2004 Carlsberg Masters Vietnam. After a quiet two year spell on the Asian Tour, Que is now raring to go and ride on his sudden burst in confidence.
