 Four to watch this week

The Volvo China Open enters its 14th edition this year and promises to deliver yet another week of world-class golfing action by some of the best golfers in the world.

We look at the top contenders, who are likely to vie for top honours at the Beijing International CBD Golf Club this week.

Zhang Lian-wei
Long regarded as the flag bearer of golf for China, Zhang will be seeking to end his five-year title drought on the same event where he last won his title. The five-time Asian Tour winner, whose overall success ignited the growing interest of golf in China, will be eager to satisfy the Chinese galleries, who are desperate for a long-awaited home success.

Liang Wen-chong
The Chinese star has been touted as the immediate successor to Zhang Lian-wei. Crowned Asia’s number one in 2007, Liang is also the the first Chinese player to win the Asian Tour’s Order of Merit following a superb season where he clinched one victory and eight other top-10s. The talented Zhongshan-based golfer who became the second Chinese player after Zhang Lian-wei to play in the US Masters last week will be seeking to put in a performance worthy of his prized US Masters invitation in front of his home fans.

S.S.P Chowrasia
India’s S.S.P Chowrasia made headlines all over the world when he won the Asian Tour’s season opener- EMAAR-MGF Indian Masters last month. Against a star-studded field that included world number four, Ernie Els, the 29-year-old held on his nerves to come out tops. All eyes will once again be on Chowrasia as he attempts to capture his second major title for the year this week.

Mark Brown
After self-declaring a three-week break, New Zealander Mark Brown is all ready and charged up for this week’s event. The current Asian Tour Order of Merit winner believes that he is ready to recapture his early season form which led him to wire-to-wire victories in India. Another win for Brown this week will certainly cap a memorable return to top flight golf for the Kiwi, who took a sabbatical several years ago when he said his game and mind were not up to mark.
