Kingston lifts another cup in South Africa
South African James Kingston blasted a superb seven-under-par 65 to lift the Vodacom Championship title on Sunday.
Kingston, a four-time winner in Asia, enjoyed his second win in three months on the Sunshine Tour when he posted a winning total of 17-under-par 271 at the Pretoria Country Club.
He had previously won the South African Airways Championship in December 2007.
“This is like a fairy tale ending for me,” said Kingston, who turned professional in 1988.
Overnight leader Adilson da Silva of Brazil shot a 71 and finished in second place two strokes behind the champion.
“Adilson was leading for two days but I knew I had a chance. A wayward drive could prove costly here and turn things around. But I always thought I had a chance,” added Kingston, who blasted eight birdies against a lone dropped shot.
On the US PGA Tour, Korean world no. 8 Choi Kyung-ju posted a steady one-under-par 70 to finish in joint seventh position at the Northern Trust Open.
Choi, who won the Sony Open in Hawaii last month, fired four birdies against three bogeys for a five-under-par 279 total.
Compatriot Charlie Wi was even-par for the day and claimed tied 14th place with a similar score by Kevin Na who finished in joint 55th spot.
American Phil Mickelson carded his second straight 70 and took the title with a 272 total.
On the Nationwide Tour, Australia’s Terry Pilkadaris finished in joint 15th position in the weather shortened HSBC New Zealand PGA Championship on Sunday.
Pilkadaris posted a 69 with a matching performance by compatriot Jarrod Lyle. The tournament was shortened to 36 holes due to inclement weather.
Darron Stiles fired a 68 and took the top spot.
