Continuing my exploration of golf in and around Normandy and Brittany, we visited Des Ormes, set around a beautiful chateau. The entry to the course is most spectacular, through the gates and along the drive, which separates the impressive practice area (range, bunkers, chipping etc) from the 5 hole par 3 warm up course! Staff were very welcoming, English spoken, naturally. Stepping onto the first tee, not knowing what to expect, we were presented with an open parkland view, wide fairway, straightforward hole. Immediate reactions were that the course is set up for holiday golf (there is a centre parcs type of resort within the grounds of the chateau too, all part of the same complex). However, as the round progressed it was to become obvious that this course is a good test of all abilities. It is in absolutely beautiful surroundings, well maintained and presented. Greens are slick yet true. Each hole presented a different challenge, several doglegs requiring thoughtful planning, tricky par 3s and long demanding, yet fair, par 5s. This turned out to be a brilliant experience! we walked off the 18th (I just missed an eagle by 4 inches, sorry 10 cm!) with the broadest grins, vowing to return again very soon. The restaurant is also worthy of mention. Excellent cuisine, reasonably priced served up by the most cheerful and friendly staff. If you get the chance you really must visit. In fact, I am looking into staying at the centre in order to make the most of the fantastic facilities (and I have a house an hour away!) Great destination for a group!
