Located only 15 km from Florence International Airport, this course was opened in 1986 and designed by the great Arnold Palmer. It has a typical American feel about it with large greens, huge bunkers and wide open fairways. There are many water hazards to negotiate and the golfer has got to use brain not brawn. The course was in perfect condition when I played it with not a blade of grass facing the wrong way. This relatively flat course has many interesting holes, not least of all, the par three, 5th. A confident Tee shot is needed here; it???s a hole that separates the men from the boy's. Other holes of note are the 6th and 18th.
This really was a joy to play and had plenty of risk-rewarding shots. It plays long in the wind and the greens are lightening quick but fair. It is a good test for all level of players and although most holes are tree lined, the trees aren't really an obstacle.
This course lacks the breathtaking views of traditional Tuscan courses, but still was beautiful to play. The appeal of Le Pavoniere was the course construction itself.
The clubs website isn't translated into English but has a unique facility allowing each hole to be seen in virtual reality. It's well worth a visit!
