Montecatini Golf Club is immersed in the Tuscan countryside South-West of Florence and is one of natural beauty. The course provides many natural hazards such as lakes, streams, trees, and ditches which have been formed as part of the natural contours of the land. The greens are very fast and undulating, putting the best golfers' skill to the test.
The course was originally an old olive grove and has stayed loyal to its landscape, but as it is quite open to the elements wind is a huge factor here. A few blind drives give the golfer a lot to think about and make scoring difficult. The fairways are fairly wide and generous and not too long, but very hilly. When I played it, the tees and fairways were not in the best of conditions but it was December and there had been a lot of rainfall previous to play.
It is a testing course that will be at its best in the summer months. My favorite hole was the stunning par three, 18th. It is all of the 150 meters from Tee to green over a lake making club selection critical. Not the longest of courses at a little over 5600 meters, but certainly a joy to play.
The clubhouse was neat and compact with adequate facilities and overall this golf club has the feel of a family run business with very friendly staff.
